TRAFFIC RULES IN MEXICO

It would be a shame if you were fined during your stay in Mexico.  Check out our tips on how to enjoy the F1 race in Mexico City without spending extra.

Here's an overview of traffic rules and regulations in Mexico:

DRIVING SIDE

Similar to the United States and Canada, vehicles in Mexico drive on the right side of the road.

SPEED LIMITS

Speed limits vary depending on the type of road and location. They are typically posted on signs along the roadside. In urban areas, speed limits usually range from 40 to 60 kilometres per hour (about 25 to 37 miles per hour), while on highways, limits can vary from 80 to 110 kilometres per hour (about 50 to 68 miles per hour).

TRAFFIC SIGNALS

Drivers must obey traffic signals, signs, and road markings. This includes stopping at red lights, yielding at yield signs, and following lane markings.

ALCOHOL BEHIND THE WHEEL

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08%. Penalties for drunk driving can include fines, licence suspension, and even imprisonment.

SEAT BELTS

Seat belt use is mandatory for all passengers in vehicles, including those in the back seat. Failure to wear seat belts can result in fines.

GIVING THE WAY

In general, vehicles must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. At intersections without traffic signals or signs, the vehicle on the right has the right of way unless otherwise indicated.

WHAT TO DO IF I AM STOPPED BY THE POLICE

If you are stopped by Mexican law enforcement while driving, it is important to remain calm. Show the officer your proof of insurance, which is similar to the procedure in the United States. If you receive a notice to pay a fine, politely ask for a written copy, which can be handled by mail or at the police station.

Before you leave, make sure you document pertinent details such as the time and location of the incident, along with the police vehicle identification number and the officer's badge number. If you have been issued with an unfair fine, explore your options for challenging it, either through the nearest municipal magistrate or by contacting the Tourist Hotline on 078.
